Crafting 3D Foam Sculptures for the Ultimate "Chuck-a-Puck" Hockey Experience

Our team was thrilled to work with the Kansas City Mavericks (an ECHL Ice Hockey team in Missouri) the past few months helping with their "Chuck-a-Puck" halftime games. For the event, audience members are handed foam pucks to "chuck" into our custom made large scale foam props. If a member scores a puck into the prop, they win a prize.

The "Chuck-a-Puck" experience brings families, friends, and hockey-goers together for a memorable half-time game where the star of the show is our four foot foam props.

Sponsored by local restaurants, our team recently worked on two props: an ice cream cup and a cactus wearing a sombrero.

How Do We Design Custom Large-Scale Foam Props?

  1. Create 3D model

During this stage, our team works closely with the client to brainstorm and finesse what the prop should look like. We send our clients renderings, 3D models, and progress images to ensure they receive the prop they imagined. For the KC Mavericks, they sent us a concept image of what they wanted and we got to work.

  2. CNC Milling

Once the model is approved, our team sends it to our CNC machine which carves the prop out of foam.

  3. Plastic Hard Coating

All our foam props are covered in a plastic hard coating to protect the prop as well as give it a plastic feeling which is easy to paint, sand, and sculpt. Having the plastic coating preserves the foam underneath so the Mavericks can use our prop for years.

  4. Paint and Ship

Once the prop is coated in hard plastic, we paint the prop based on the client's requests and ship them on their way. Since the KC Mavericks had sponsors funding the props, they wanted to print logo themselves and requested we send them solid color props. Our team is very flexible and is happy to paint fully detailed props, or solid color props depending on your project needs.
